Bukhara - Samarkand: Two Rivals, Two Peers

Tashkent - Bukhara - Samarkand - Tashkent

Samarkand and Bukhara, both alike in dignity, have always been implicit rivals; hence the periods of growth of Bukhara coincided with the periods of decline in the history of Samarkand and vice versa. And though the rulers of Samarkand initiated the construction works in Bukhara (for instance Ulugbek Madrassah), while the representatives of Bukhara rulers adorned Samarkand with majestic architectural complexes (Sher-Dor and Tillya Kari Madrassahs), informally, the cities have contended with each other for the title of the most beautiful city in Central Asia.

Some will show preference for Bukhara, some for Samarkand. But without fail each visitor will be fascinated by the artistic genius of the old masters.
