From the throne of Fergana Principality to the throne of India:
Walking in the Footsteps of Zahir ad-Din Mohammed Babur, the founder of Mughal Empire

Uzbekistan – India

The descendent of Timur, the outstanding Uzbek poet, scholar and statesman – Zahir ad-Din Mohammaed Babur was born in Andijan on February 14th, 1483. His father Omar Shaikh Mirza – the great grandson of Amir Temur, was the ruler of Fergana principality while his mother Kutlug Nigar begim was the daughter of Yunuskhan, the renowned ruler of Tashkent and descendent of Genghis khan.

At the age of 12, after the death of his father in 1494, Babur ascended to the throne and became the ruler of Fergana principality. By that time the entire territory of Temur’s empire has been conquered by the Sheybanids dynasty. Babur undertakes tow campaigns against Samarkand in 1498 and in 1500 -1501 in order to liberate the city but failed to achieve success. With a small group of followers and relatives Babur then moved to Kabul. Having settled dawn in Kabul, Babur formed a new army and in 1519 marched on India. It was only in April of 1526, following the victory over sultan Ibrahim Lodi at Panipat to the north of Delhi, that Babur created his vast state – the Empire of Baburids, better known as Great Mighals Empire. The city of Agra on the river Jamna became the capital of the new empire. Babur held the Indian throne for five years (from 1525 to 1530) and died on December 26th, 1530 at the age of 47. He was buried in Nurafshan garden in Agra, but later, in accordance with Babur’s will, the remains were moved to Kabul and buried at Baghi Baburi (Babur’s Garden).
